Steve and I went to University of North Carolina at Pembroke together. We often got in trouble driving back and forth. He was always the funniest guy in class. I remember a teacher singled out an essay that he wrote and read it to the class. He had written that one time he did something that got him in trouble enough to get a spanking. He said that he knew he had gotten punished when he noticed that the spanking had left a ring in the bathtub. I was really looking forward to seeing him.

Steve Alexander and I almost got into a fistfight in gym class senior year.  We were guarding each other in a basketball game during class.  I thought Steve's defense was too close and rough.  I reciprocated, only more so, which immediately sparked a shoving match.  My memory is that fellow class members stepped in and pulled us apart before the teacher noticed.

I didn't know Steve well.  This experience suggested he was a fierce competitor, which must have served him well on the East cross-country and track teams and later in life.  From his obituary, I was surprised to learn we graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in the same year.  He loved hiking and, apparently, animals -- two interests I share.

I  wish I had a chance to see him at the reunion, to talk about our basketball encounter, and hopefully to laugh about it.  (No fistfights at the reunion!)

     Rest In Peace, Steve.
