Debbie Pickens Durham passed away on January 16, 1997 as a result of an automobile crash due to black ice. She was married to Mark Durham and the couple had 2 sons.
She was a school teacher and a resident of Laurinburg, North Carolina at the time of her death, Debbie was buried at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
I believe we all recall Debbie as the genuine article---kind, gracious, and generous in all matters. Soft spoken as she was, we knew to listen when Debbie had a suggestion. Her ideas invariably proved worthwhile and relevant; she had a way of gently distilling confusion to clarity, always armed with a pithy explanation. She could reconcile differing opinions without a trace of judgement. A rare person, a rare talent.I can imagine her as a spectcular steward of young people.
The world needs more Debbies-- which makes her accidental, premature death all the more tragic. Rest in peace, Debbie. We miss you mightily.
